Sophia expressed deep anguish over her situation, saying, “We are desperate to get our little boy home.” She emphasized that being by Matthew’s side is where she feels she must be, despite the fear and uncertainty that each day brings. Sophia shared that staying with him is what helps her endure these difficult times.
The family is facing a challenge they never anticipated and admitted they typically would not ask for assistance. Sophia conveyed their urgent wish to have Matthew returned to the UK, where he can be reunited with his father and receive the specialized care necessary for his condition. “We are just a family who went away on holiday with our healthy little boy, and we desperately want to bring him home,” she explained.
Lia’s Wings, a charity involved in the case, highlighted that commercial flights are not suitable for transporting children in Matthew’s fragile state, and that hiring an air ambulance would be prohibitively costly. Charlotte Young, the charity’s chief operational officer, noted that they are currently exploring the option of arranging a private aircraft accompanied by a standby medical team.
Young described Sophia’s emotional state as tormented, saying, “I would describe Sofia as living on earth but in hell, she is emotionally distraught.” She added that Sophia finds some solace only when she is close to Matthew, uncertain about what lies ahead and trapped in a distressing limbo. “She does not know what is next, she is in limbo and she is finding it incredibly hard,” Young concluded
